The Old People Retreat
My seven siblings, our spouses and our 89 year old Mom rented this fabulous house on North TopSail Beach. We've had reunions over the last 20 or so years at various beaches in North Carolina, from the Outer Banks to Holden Beach and this was one of the best rentals we have had the pleasure of visiting. The bedrooms were very nice, the beds comfortable, and all bedrooms had adjoining bathrooms in all. There was an elevator for Mom which was great, as this is a four story house. The kitchen, dining, living room and a bar are on the fourth floor which has an unbeatable view and a spacious balcony. The beach is very close, unlike some of our rentals in other years and places, so it was easy for Mom to walk down and sit with her feet in the sand. The beach is not terribly wide (from end of dock to water at low tide) but still plenty of room to set up a canopy or beach tables and umbrellas. Although, you do have to wait for low tide to set up your beach furniture. The ocean was still very warm and inviting, even in October! There is a bar area next to the pool (which we had heated and it was sooo nice!) and a bar and a pool table on the second floor. There is also a central social area on each floor. The hot tub is on the roof and it's the highest point on that stretch of the beach with glorious views all around. You have the ocean on one side and the marsh and inlet on the other, with lots of bird watching. The house itself was clean and inviting. It's a five minute drive to a Food Lion grocery store, and the ABC store is even closer. A well stocked kitchen made meals a breeze - we even celebrated Thanksgiving early with a turkey and all the fixings. The dining room table is huge, and great for socializing. Laundry facilities on the second floor are modern and up to date. We were there in mid-October and the price for that off season time was fantastic. We would have immediately jumped on the next year, (as you can reserve that same week right away) but we had too many people that couldn't plan that far ahead with their jobs. However, when the time comes and we are ready to find our next vacation, this will be the first house I look at for availability. I feel extremely fortunate that we were able to stay there. We even had to cut our vacation short by a day because of Hurrican Matthew, but we had such a great week until that point it didn't even matter.
